Summer Fun: Free Activities for Kids

By George Hulse, Vice President of External Affairs, Healthfirst

One of the best things about summer time is all the free activities for kids. Kids don’t have to stay indoors and play video games or watch movies when there is a wealth of fun community activities out there. Not only is my company sponsoring many events this summer, but there are a ton of activities being offered all throughout the city. Here a list of a few of my favorites:

Get Active

Group Trail Ride
Every Sunday from 8:30-10:30am, bring your bicycle for a fun, social ride in Cunningham Park, Queens. This group rides on advanced trails, but at an intermediate pace. Mountain bike skills and a helmet are a must.

Shape up NYC: Zumba
Bring the whole family for some fast-paced, Latin-infused cardio dancing at West Harlem Piers on 125 St. in Manhattan. Every Saturday till August 28 from 11-12pm, you can enjoy this free class, one of more than 175 free fitness classes that Shape Up NYC offers every week.

Community Pools
Practice those underwater handstands at more than 60 New York City public indoor and outdoor pools. There are free swim classes that teach tots (ages 1½-5) and children (ages 6-17) basic water safety and swimming skills at New York City public outdoor pools.

Get Cultured

West Indian American Day Carnival and Children’s Parade
The Labor Day Carnival Parade, hosted this year on August 31, travels down Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights,Brooklyn, and attracts more than 3 million people every year. This year’s highlights will include entertainment showcases, a carnival, Stay in School Concert, and costume showcase

CMA Pier Pop Up at Hudson River Park
Every Tuesday and Thursday from 1-4pm (with the exception of July 4), the Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA) will provide hands-on art-making activities for every age inspired by the Hudson River waterfront. Kids will even be able to contribute to a larger-scale collaborative project.

WBLS Summer Concert Series

From June through August, WBLS 107.5 FM will host 13 free R&B and gospel concerts—in conjunction with Healthfirst and the City Parks Foundation—at some of New York City’s biggest parks, including Von King Park in Brooklyn; Queensbridge Park in Queens; Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park; and New York’s famous Central Park!
