Renew Your Insurance
Why You Must Renew Your Insurance Every Year – and How to Do It
According to New York state law, you must update (or “renew”) your insurance coverage once a year. This process helps us make sure you are in the right plan or program, based on your age, health needs, and monthly income.
If you or a family member are in any of the following plans or programs, you must renew the plan or program once a year, on or before the anniversary of when you signed up:
- Child Health Plus
- Family Health Plus
- Medicare members in a Special Needs Plan (Life Improvement Plan and Maximum Plan)
- Healthy NY (Commercial)
For example, if your coverage starts on April 1, 2011, you will need to renew the coverage for this plan on or before April 1st of every year you wish to remain covered.

Don’t lose your health insurance! Make sure you know what you need to do to stay insured.
For some Healthfirst plans or programs, you will need to make a monthly payment (or “premium”) to stay insured. It’s important to make all payments on time. You can make payments online, by phone, or at any Healthfirst office in your neighborhood.
Please Note: You must live in New York City, Long Island, or Westchester (Medicare Special Needs members only) to keep your health insurance. If you are moving or have other questions about your health insurance, give us a call to make sure you understand your health plan or program details.
