Beat the Heat and Have a Healthy Summer

As the heat and humidity of the summer months reach sizzling highs, you may be tempted to turn up the air conditioning and tone down your activity level—including outdoor activities. But the summer months don’t have to mean you’re stuck indoors or your fitness and health decline. Here are a few tips to help you beat the summer heat, stay healthy and be well!

Hydration is Hip
Water is the hot new thing this summer—no pun intended. Get rid of sugary sweet fruit drinks, soda (regular and diet) and even sports drinks, in favor of plain old H2O. Research shows that even diet sodas can contribute to weight gain. Invest in a reusable BPA-free water container and be sure to carry it with you wherever you go. That way, you’ll never be caught in the heat without hydration.

Sunscreen is Smart
If you’re planning to spend your day outside, make sure you slather on the sunscreen before you head out the door. According to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), skin cancer is the most rapidly increasing cancer in the U.S. with more than 1 million new cases each year. The most likely reason that skin cancer rates are rising is that people are spending more time outdoors. Ozone layer depletion may also contribute. Using SPF lotion consistently and reapplying when necessary prevents damage to the skin. Visit the NYC DOHMH website for more information and tips, including translation into 25+ languages.

Stay Fit with Got 2B Fit
As beach and bathing suit season kicks into high gear, you may feel like it’s time to focus on getting fit. Healthfirst members can take advantage of our “Got 2B Fit” program which increases awareness about obesity prevention and treatment through educational information and opportunities. If you take advantage of this program, you will receive educational materials on how to live a healthier lifestyle through better nutrition, increased physical activity, and positive changes. You will also receive a list of online obesity resources, as well as community physical fitness programs. Parents can learn how to identify if you or your child is at risk for being overweight or obese by utilizing information about Body Mass Index (BMI). Visit our Quality Improvement page for more info on this and other Healthfirst programs.

Fill Up with Fruit
The summer season is a great time to increase your fruit consumption. Replace fruit drinks with real fruit and you’ll be cutting calories, while staying full for longer. Check out FoodFit.com’s list of summer fruits and veggies to see what’s in season during the summer.

Camps for the Kiddies
Summer break can sometimes mean that kids become restless. Plan ahead and sign them up for a Summer Camp to keep them entertained and occupied. The NYC DOHMH provides a Directory of Summer Camps by borough on their website. Check it out today to find a camp near you to help keep your kids active this summer.
