NEW YORK, NY—March 5, 2014—Healthfirst announces their Presenting Sponsorship of the 2014 American Diabetes Association of Greater New York EXPO. This FREE event will be held in the North Wing of the Jacob Javits Convention Center on Saturday, March 15, 2014 from 10:00am–4:00pm. More than 10,000 attendees are expected from the Greater New York region. The EXPO attracts those affected by diabetes and the general public interested in learning how to live healthier, active lifestyles, and change the future of diabetes.

The EXPO will feature more than 90 prominent corporate exhibitors with the latest products, resources and educational information on diabetes in the Family Fun, Active Living, Cultural, Por Tu Familia, Live Empowered and Ask the Expert zones. Also joining the fight to stop diabetes, New York Giants Offensive Lineman, Kevin Boothe, will meet attendees and sign autographs in the Kids Zone from 11:00am - 2:00pm.

The EXPO’s Main Stage will feature healthy eating demonstrations and tastings by celebrity chefs Elsie Ramos (FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen) and Jeff Vaden (The Food Network), Gina Keatley, Guddia Singh, Vincent Tropepe, Jenny Wang, and Ronaldo Linares. All attendees will also have the opportunity to receive FREE health screenings for A1C, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI), podiatry, blood pressure and heart health.

“Diabetes is a disease that plagues many of our members and our communities,” said Pat Wang, Healthfirst President and CEO. “Our Presenting Sponsorship of this year’s American Diabetes Association EXPO reflects our overall mission to ensure that New Yorkers have access to resources that empower them to prevent and manage diabetes and reap long-term health benefits.”

American Diabetes Association Executive Director of Greater New York Kevin Shippy said, “We welcome Healthfirst’s sponsorship and support in joining the movement to Stop Diabetes in the most populous and diverse market in the U.S. Those families most affected by diabetes mirror Healthfirst’s customers and demonstrates the organization’s commitment to the Greater New York communities served by increasing diabetes awareness, education, management and prevention, specifically to the high risk populations.”

Diabetes affects nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States, and more than one million adults in New York alone. An additional 79 million have prediabetes, and by year 2050, if current trends continue, 1 in 3 adults will be diagnosed with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is more prevalent in African-Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian-Americans, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, all of whom are considered higher risk populations.
