Healthfirst and HHC Health and Hospitals Corporation Co-Sponsor Cinco de Mayo Celebrations in the Bronx, Queens and Manhattan

Free community events hosted by Elmhurst Hospital Center, Lincoln Medical Center & Metropolitan Hospital Center

NEW YORK, NY, April 21, 2014 – Healthfirst and Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) are co-sponsoring Cinco de Mayo celebrations at HHC provider locations throughout the city on Monday, May 5, 2014. The free public events will be held at Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens and Metropolitan Hospital Center in Manhattan. All events will feature a host of activities for kids and the whole family to enjoy including traditional Mexican entertainment, free health screenings, face painting, magic shows and giveaways. The Cinco de Mayo celebrations kickoff on May 3 with the first event scheduled at St. Jerome's Church in the Bronx (co-sponsored by Lincoln Medical Center).

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the French-Mexican War. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into an annual celebration of Mexican culture and heritage.

“Healthfirst takes great pride in working with our HHC provider hospitals to celebrate this important holiday in the Mexican community and present free events around the city for our members and community residents to enjoy,” said George Hulse, Healthfirst Vice President of External Affairs. “We look forward to offering a day of fun and promoting the important message of taking charge of your health.”

Local elected officials are expected to make appearances at each event to present Community Service Awards to selected neighborhood honorees. Exact locations and times are as follows:

  • May 3, 2014: St. Jerome's Church (with Lincoln Medical Center) at 230 East 138th St, Bronx, NY (11am - 4pm)
  • May 5, 2014: Elmhurst Hospital Center (street fair): 41st Avenue at 81st Street, Elmhurst, NY (12:30pm – 4pm)
  • May 5, 2014: Metropolitan Hospital Center (street fair):  1901 1st Avenue, New York, NY (10am – 3pm)
