Winners Announced for the 2013 Long Island Youth Singing Contest!

Congratulations to the Winners of the 2013 Long Island Youth Singing Contest!

On December 7, Healthfirst® and NuHealth announced the winners of the fourth annual Long Island Youth Singing Contest, held at Circulo de la Hispanidad in Hempstead, NY. Out of 31 finalists, six winners took home top prizes of $600 for first place, $400 for second place, and $300 for third place. Contestants’ schools were awarded certificates to recognize their contribution to the event.

Audience member Rosita Brooks praised the contest for providing a supportive forum for the young people to compete and demonstrate their skill. “It was a beautiful show and a very positive step for the youth,” she says. “It’s a great opportunity for them to show their talent.”

Previously open only to Nassau County residents, the competition was expanded this year to include participants from Suffolk County. In October, 312 students entered the first round of the competition, and that number was reduced by successive elimination rounds until only the 31 finalists remained.

Ashonti Merritt’s rendition of “Listen” by Beyonce, gained her second place in the High School category. Singing since the age of five, she plans to continue focusing seriously on developing her singing abilities. “I want to take singing all the way.”

Congratulations to all our winners!
